The Wingfield apartment is a combination of the real tenement world and the illusions of the characters. An enigmatic figure looms over the apartment that is at once a billboard for the Continental Shoe Company where Tom works, a reminder of the missing father, and an icon of the longed for gentleman caller. Two US walls, behind the collage of tenement windows were rear-projection surfaces for memory imagery to support moments like Amanda's jonquil scene. Other images included real rain on the large window, and a fire-escape balcony for a St. Louis blues playing neighbor.
